HASA's Political Philosophy
HASA has a responsibility to inform our membership about political issues that directly impact our public schools. When appropriate, we will also invite candidates to share their platforms concerning education. HASA has an active PAC and is part of our HASA Constitution/By-laws and our HASA Budget. Below is our political philosophy approved at our HASA General Membership meeting in April, 2018:
HASA has an active Political Action Committee (PAC) that allows our organization to be more politically engaged in local, regional and state elections and referendums. The PAC provides support and endorsements to selected politicians that best serve the needs of our students, schools, community and educators. HASA members will have $5.00 of their annual dues earmarked to the HASA PAC unless they opt out. If you wish to opt out of the PAC, please download, complete and mail the form located on the HASA website.
HASA will endorse political candidates (excluding School Board races) who support our students, schools and communities related to education. We will focus on the candidates support of education and no other campaigning issues facing our community or state. HASA will take a stand on issues that impact our schools. HASA is not “red” or “blue” when supporting candidate; however, we will support and endorse candidates, initiatives, referendums and amendments. Our Executive Board and Advisory Board will help determine which candidates to support. Whenever possible, general members will be invited to hear from candidates and will have an opportunity to share their recommendations for candidates to the HASA Board.
To reiterate, HASA did not endorse any candidates during the 2018 election. HASA fully supported the one-half cent referendum. However, during the 2020 election primaries and general election, HASA will be fully engaged in identifying and endorsing the best candidates who support our schools. In addition, our goal is to provide information to our members so that they can make independent, informed decisions about a variety of races in the general election. We encourage everyone to attend HASA events and, of course, to vote in August and November.
Please contact any HASA Executive Board, Advisory Board or HASA Executive Director if you have any questions.
